miramax has recently bought the rights to release all hong kong films in the west. so far they have massicared 'shaolin soccer' by re editing the film, takeing out scenes, re dubbing the soundtrack and changing the films plot to make it "more american". basicaly the miramax release of that film is completely different to it's hong kong release. miramax are now in the process of re editing the film 'hero'. the lastest wu xia film from award winning director zhang yi mou (red sorgum, the road home). the film stars jet li, maggie cheung, tony leung and zhang ziyi. it is zhang yi mou's first wu xia film and is tiped to rival the success of ang lee's 'crouching tiger, hidden dragon'. for information on 'hero' visit www.monkeypeaches.com help stop miramax doing to 'hero' what they did to 'shaolin soccer'. write them an e-mail at one or all of these address's. webmaster@miramax.com MMX_Webmaster_M@Miramax.com M@Miramax.com

oh dat's terrible i agree, leave the hk films alone hollywood! i've yet to watch shaolin soccer, but i got it on dvd in chinese, so i'm guessing it's the original version. come to think of it, who allowed miramax to buy all the rights in the first place? if the hk industry allowed it to happen, then maybe they deserve some backlash too...

you probably have the original hong kong version then. miramax hasn't released there version of 'shaoling soccer' in the theaters yet. there are a few copies of the mirama version floating around e bay and amazon though.
check the DVD cover for the distribution company name. it should be on the back down the bottom near the copy write details.
the good thing about being in australia is that hong kong films where usualy distributed here by china town cinema and siren entertainment, there are still a good amount of there versions around the specialist video stores (especially the one's in china town).
another good thing i heard was that 'hero' will be released in china later this year while the rest of the world has to wait till mid next year. the good thing about that is there will be a lot of VCD coppies of the chinese release on hkfix.com, ebay and amazon. they wont be the official DVD so there won't be any special features but as long as your DVD player can play VCD's the picture quality should be just as good.
i plan to see the film when i'm in china next year (if it's still on cinema release when i'm there)
